About Wordwise

Wordwise Bible Studies and Wordwise Hyms were websites originally developed by the late pastor and teacher Robert Cottrill. His articles, devotionals and studies are being consolidated onto this site by his son so that they can continue to be useful to you.

Robert went home to be with his Saviour on the 31st of August 2019, after a short illness.

Here is Robert’s original introduction to the site:

Greetings, from Saskatchewan Canada!

My name is Robert Cottrill. For the past 40 years and more, I have been an avid student of the Word of God. After graduating from Ontario Bible College and the University of Windsor (also in Ontario, Canada), I went on to serve as the pastor of several churches in Ontario and Saskatchewan–congregations affiliated with the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada, and the Baptist General Conference of Canada.

I hosted a weekly radio program for a number of years, and taught a weekly, hour-long Bible survey course on local television. I taught for eight years in two Saskatchewan colleges, Briercrest Bible College and Millar College of the Bible, also serving in the latter as academic dean. (Both of these are interdenominational schools.)

As I have for many years, I continue to write a weekly column, published in several newspapers, on the history and significance of our hymns. And I continue speaking and ministering in music, as the Lord gives opportunity. But with semi-retirement from full-time ministry, I determined to make available, through a website, some of the hundreds of articles and Bible studies I had created over the years. That is “Wordwise.”

Most of what you will find here is thus my own work, by the grace of God, developed over four decades of Christian ministry. That being so, you have a right to know where I’m coming from, in terms of my beliefs. I hold a conservative view of the Scriptures, adhering to the fundamentals of the apostolic faith. While I want to treat those who differ with courtesy, I firmly believe Christians need to “contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3). (A fuller doctrinal statement can be found here.)

Thank you for visiting. And if you find the site helpful, please tell a friend!

May God richly bless you.

Robert Cottrill
