Other evening hymns that I love are “Sun of My Soul,” “Now the Day is Over” (esp. the music), “Abide With Me,” and “Day is Dying in the West” (esp. the music). And I can’t mention evening hymns without my favorite morning hymn — “When Morning Gilds the Skies” (esp. the music — composed by the same person who composed the music for “Now the Day Is Over” — Joseph Barnby). Joseph Barnby has recently become one of my favorite hymn composers. His music is matchless.

((( I wonder what he would have done with “Love Lifted Me.” ))) 🙁

Thanks! I had a great chuckle over your comment about Love Lifted Me. Right on!

And I like you list of more lovely evening hymns. Do you know the hymn tune Alverstoke, that Mr. Barnby wrote? It’s offered as an alternative tune for Still, Still with Thee, on the Cyber Hymnal. Dick Adams plays it a bit too fast (MIDI file) for my liking, but it’s simply gorgeous. I hesitate to prefer Barnby over a great composer like Mendelssohn–whose tune Consolation is what most hymnals use–but in this case, give me Barnby!
